Today in science history

On November 20 in 1602, physicist Otto von Guericke is born in Magdeburg, Germany. Inspired by a philosophic debate over the impossibility of a vacuum, he built history's first. To create this first vacuum (in 1650), he built the first air pump. He also built the first electrical generator, and with it became the first to see electrically created light (when he ran electricity through a ball of sulfur).
